DUI Checkpoints - Are They About Public Safety or All About the Cash
Posted on Feb 16, 2010
This is an in-depth article about the questions surrounding California DUI checkpoints. A recent investigation by the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley with California Watch has found some alarming facts, among them:
- That the DUI checkpoints are way overstaffed with police officers (all earning overtime)
- That the checkpoints seem to unfairly target minorities
- That officers seem to be impounding cars of unlicensed (not drunk) drivers, in direct violation of a 2005 federal appellate court ruling.
The article certainly raises some interesting questions.
