DUI Checkpoints - Are They About Public Safety or All About the Cash

This is an in-depth article about the questions surrounding California DUI checkpoints.  A recent investigation by the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley with California Watch has found some alarming facts, among them:

  • That the DUI checkpoints are way overstaffed with police officers (all earning overtime)
  • That the checkpoints seem to unfairly target minorities
  • That officers seem to be impounding cars of unlicensed (not drunk) drivers, in direct violation of a 2005 federal appellate court ruling.  

The article certainly raises some interesting questions.
