Police Fear Increasing Crime Rates as Budgets Decrease

Police chiefs around the country are concerned that budget cuts are leading to increased crime rates, often reversing dramatic reductions in crimes. They cite not only cuts in their budgets (leading to the elimination of units such as narcotics, patrol squads, community outreach, and officers in schools), but also cuts in social services funding (eliminating some programs such as those that help prisoners prepare for release into society, and those that offer mental health services.
